Based on conversations with Mr. Thiessen, Mrs. Boyd, Ms. Donaldson, and the second grade teachers, we just wanted to encourage you to please provide opportunities for your kiddo to have playdates and be social with people outside of those who live with them. We recognize that every family has a different comfort level with interacting with other families! Kids learn many social skills and problem-solving skills when they spend time with people outside the house. It could be as simple as going to the park, attending an activity at the library (Gum Spring Library - adjust the filters to be for elementary age and Gum Spring), or playing with kids in the neighborhood. If you would like another copy of our class directory to help with scheduling playdates, please feel free to email me (I do not post it anywhere other than email).
The class had a discussion about homework and some habits that we have with completing it and making sure it gets to school. They were suggesting having a set time, such as 4:00pm or after a specific activity (brain break, snack, getting off the bus). Some kids said that they make sure their homework stays with their folder when they do it and then the folder goes straight back into their backpack. Big shout-out to grown-ups on helping your child a consistent schedule! It was very impressive hearing all the ways they are staying responsible. I complimented the whole class on how they DO take responsibility for their homework; they are very good about not blaming any of their adults for forgetting their homework or their folder. The kids have been consistently saying "I forgot..." which is a big step for second graders to take. I offered them a phrase that I use regularly to not misplace items - "put it away, not down". Overall, just wanted to let you all know that we discussed homework this morning and I was very impressed by their answers and routines. 😊
