2nd Grade Field Trip

Thursday, November 7, 2024

Dear families,

The second grade will be going to the LEGO Discovery Center in Springfield, Virginia. Students will experience and explore force and motion to support science standard 2.2:

The student will investigate and understand that different types of forces may cause an object’s motion to change. Key ideas include a) forces from direct contact can cause an object to move; b) some forces, including gravity and magnetism, can cause objects to move from a distance; and c) forces have applications in our lives.

With their group and chaperone, your child will explore the Center and attend a 45 minute workshop called “Push Car Derby”.

Students will build a car with a removable brake and use a spring launcher to explore push and pull forces, and the effects of friction. Then explore and explain how force and friction can change the speed of an object and affect how far it'll go in a push car race.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the 5Cs of LCPS by collaborating, communicating, and communicating with each other while showing creativity and using critical thinking skills.

What to Wear: We will be inside so please be sure that your child wears comfortable clothes and sneakers/closed-toe shoes.

Lunch: Students need to bring a bag lunch. Bag lunches should not contain anything breakable. It is preferred that all contents are in disposable bags/containers as teachers and chaperones are NOT responsible for any lost items. We also request that students do not bring foods containing nuts or peanuts.

Cost: $17 per student
