It was nice to have a mini-break and then a short school week! I hope you and the kiddos enjoyed (and survived) it. 😉

As always, I noticed some trends while doing report cards. These are just some things to keep in mind and check on with your child. If it applies directly to your child, you will find it in the comment on their report card:
  • Submitting blank activities on Seesaw
    • If a child submits their work, it goes to their teacher for review and parents cannot see it until the teacher has approved it or sent it back. Some students are using this to say, "I'm done!" without actually being done.
    • Try to check your child's Seesaw the following morning. This allows Ms. Stiffler time to check over work and also give you a clear picture of what is completed and what needs to be completed.
  • PLEASE check your child's To Do AND In-Progress folders on Seesaw
    • To Do items are activities that your child has not started.
    • In-Progress items are activities that they have either started and not finished or have submitted and Ms. Stiffler has sent back for them to fix.
    • I understand that we are all pushing our second graders to be independent and responsible for their work. However, they are still very much in the guidance stage where it is beneficial to look over their daily work with them and make sure everything is being completed.
  • All Must-dos are required work.
    • Many students are focusing on activities that are labelled "GRADED". Must-dos are just as as important as they help with practicing current skills or reviewing previous skills.
    • I also use completion of Must-do activities to determine your child's effort for the quarter since we are online.
    • This includes time on Dreambox, RAZ Kids, and Lalilo.
      • These programs allow students to practice, review, and build skills.
    • Occasionally, there is an extra activity labelled "MUST DO" that is not on the playlist. These are activities that I have assigned to the kids as I see a need for them to practice the skill. This is based on observations and discussions in class.
  • If it is a Must-do on the playlist, then it must be completed.
    • The Must-dos on the playlist are determined by the second grade team. It allows for fair grading across the grade level as all students are expected to complete the same work each week.
In general, we are seeing low addition and subtraction fluency in our second graders, meaning that it takes them a long time to add or subtract problems between 1-20. Normally, by the end of second grade, we expect students to be fluent in their addition and subtraction facts. This is very important when they go to third grade as they start learning multiplication and division. Please encourage your child to complete time on Dreambox and work with them on their fact fluency. You can use flash cards or any of the various math games online. I have a couple other resources listed HERE.

We will start our reading groups next week! You should have received an email with your child's reading group, scheduled days, and scheduled time. It is also posted on our Schoology page. Your child only has access to the button for their group and it lists the days and time. The button just goes to our normal Google Meet link.
