TouchMath

Tuesday, February 8, 2022

As our second graders are building their addition and subtraction fact fluency, we are always learning new strategies. One strategy is TouchMath which involve TouchPoints on numbers that allows students to mentally and physically count numbers.

Here is a copy of numbers 1-9 with TouchPoints on it.

Here is a great video explaining TouchMath and how the TouchPoints work. While this video states that it is for younger kiddos, this is still a fantastic resource for our second graders as it helps them physically show their numbers while adding.

Fact Fluency Resources

Monday, November 5, 2018
Here are some great online resources for practicing fact fluency (addition and subtraction).
  1. ABCya Math
  2. Online Flashcards
    • https://www.factmonster.com/math/flashcards
    • This requires students to type in the answer. It is not timed so it is at their own pace. It has sets for addition, subtraction, and mixed addition and subtraction.
    • Once they type the answer, the student must hit the "enter" key to submit their answer.
  3. Flashcards at home.
  4. Timed Drills
    • Here are the copies for the timed drills that we use in second grade.
      • These are great for practicing being timed. It is important that your child is practicing all of their addition and subtraction facts, not just trying to remember these specific facts.

Quarter 2 Math Activities

Monday, January 29, 2018
To study for the Quarter 2 Post-Test in Math, we rotated through several activities with a partner.

Below, you will find PDFs of each of the activities so that you and your student can practice these skills at home as well. Enjoy the math fun!
  • Regrouping with Addition - Match It Up!: Make two piles, one for problems and one for sums. Each partner chooses a problem and solves to find the sum; then searches for the matching sum card. The partners check each other's math for correctness. First to collect five cards wins. This can also be played independently.
  • Regrouping with Subtraction - I Spin 'Round - Partner 1 spins the Spinner #1 and records the number; they repeat with Spinner #2 and solve for the difference. Partner 2 follows the same steps. Whoever has the higher difference receives a tally mark. Partner with the most tally marks at the end wins!
  • Estimation - Scoot! - Independently, the student chooses a card from the pile. After matching the number on the recording sheet, they estimate the answer to the equation. Continue until all cards have been answered or time runs out.
  • Probability - Get A-Head - Using 10 coins, students decide how likely it is to pick a head. One partner closes their eyes and picks a coin. If it is a head, they keep it. Repeat until the coins are gone. Partner with the most coins wins!
  • Graphing - Rock, Paper, Scissors - Partners play 5 or more rounds of Rock, Paper, Scissors. Each person records their own wins and losses; they will use the data to create a pictograph and answer questions about it.
