Reminders for Friday, September 13th
  • Remember your Chromebook and charger every day!
  • Practice your student ID number!
  • Homework packet due on Friday, 9/20.
    • It will be sent home on Monday, 9/16 
  • Patterns quiz on Thursday, 9/19 (math)
    • Increasing patterns, repeating patterns, and extending patterns
  • Holidays Writing assignment on Friday, 9/20 (social studies)
    • Study guide - The study guide has a LOT of information.
    • Your child will need to know the symbols that go with at least ONE specific United States holiday AND two traditions from a holiday that they celebrate at home. Your child will NOT be expected to memorize all of the holidays and their symbols.
  • Basic Addition quiz on Friday, 9/27 (math)
    • Adding given equations with answers up to 20.
  • Culture Project due by Friday, 9/27
    • complete AT HOME
    • packet, photo, and presentation
  • Scientific Method labs 9/23 - 10/1 (science)
    • We will not be taking a test on scientific method. We will be completing multiple labs in class to see how well your child can follow the directions and make inferences about what they learn from each lab.
    • Please discuss with your child the importance of listening to directions during science. Thank you!
  • Germs quiz on Wednesday, 10/2 (health)
  • No school 10/3 - Rosh Hashanah 
  • No school 10/4 - teacher work day
  • Picture Day on Tuesday, 10/8
    • We will also have a picture day in the spring.
Notes
  • Book Fair is open next week 9/16 - 9/20!
    • During school hours from 8am - 2pm.
    • Book Fair Family Night on Tuesday, 9/17 from 3:30 - 6:30pm.
      • I'll be there from 4:30 - 5:30pm!
  • PEP (Parents as Educational Partners)
    • There are monthly events for grown-ups/caregivers of English Language (EL students). They are hosted by Mrs. Gustilo and Mrs. Chatila, two of our EL teachers at PNB. All meetings are held at Pinebrook.
  • Weekly Reminder
    • Return library books by Mondays!
      • We will get new books EVERY Monday.
      • If you do not return your books, you will not be allowed to pick out new books.
    • Wear sneakers on Tuesday and Thursday for P.E.
      • If you do not wear sneakers/tennis shoes/trainers or closed-toed shoes (NO boots), you will not be allowed to participate in P.E. This is a rule from the P.E. teachers.
    • Ice Cream is available at lunch on Wednesdays for $1.
      • LCPS allows students to purchase ice cream any day of the week.
      • As a team, second grade is encouarged to get ice cream on Wednesday to help prevent any chaos (like buying 4 ice creams).
    • House Spirit Days are on Fridays.
      • Wear your house color on Fridays to show house spirit. 
    • Parents can join at lunchtime on Tuesdays and Thursdays!
      • Please be sure to bring your ID card to get in the front door.
      • Please make sure to stay at our table. You can walk your kiddo back to the classroom after lunch (when Ms. Stiffler comes to pick them up) if you would like.
      • Our lunch is 12:20 - 12:50pm.
PTA Events
  • Fall Fest on Saturday, 9/14 from 2-5pm!
  • Spirit Night on 9/25 at Manhattan Pizza, South Riding location
    • any order from 11am - 10pm will have some money go to Pinebrook PTA
  • School Store will now be open on Fridays from 7:40 - 8:00am.
Week Overview
SEL/Morning Meeting -  The first link will tell you about our conversations throughout the week. This link will tell you more about what SEL is from LCPS. 
Phonics - We started learning about digraphs - 2 letters, 1 sound - with sh /sh/ (shut), wh /wh/ (what). We will learn about ch /ch (lunch), ck /ck/ (check), ng /ng/ (ring), ph /f/ (phone) next week.
Handwriting  -  We practiced the letters h, n, l, g, w, p, b.
Reading - We read Clark the Shark and discussed the central idea, asked questions, and found the setting.
Writing - We learned about verbs (action words) and subject-predicate (who? and does what? of a sentence).
Math - We learned how to read the data from a pictograph; this will be repeated learning later in the year. We will learn about patterns next week and learn about it again later in the year.
Social Studies We completed our one-week National Symbols unit and learned about the Statue of Liberty, American flag, bald eagle, and the Washington Monument. Next week, we will learn about some national holidays.
