Phonemic awareness is broken up into different categories:
- letter sounds
- blending
- taking individual phonemes and putting them together to make a word
- example - /h/ /short a/ /t/ would be hat
- segmenting
- breaking a word into its individual phonemes
- example - cat would be /c/ /short a/ /t/, ring would be /r/ /short i/ /ng/
- encoding
- being able to spell words that you hear
- decoding
- being able sound out and read words that you see
